GENERAL SESSIONS

Title: Google Earth: An Authentic Research Project
Format and Location: Workshop, Demonstration Spartan Conference Room
Description: In this session, a panel of teachers from the English Department will demonstrate how students in their classes used Google Earth to conduct ethnographic research about an essential question of the junior-level English class: what does it mean to be an American? The American Interview Google Earth project enhanced several existing goals of the course, now better supported by technology. The project provided an authentic way for students to pursue major questions of the course, introduced an inquiry-based research model, and helped students to create and refine thesis statements.
As part of their research, students collected data through interviews with family and friends, created Google Earth place marks, and compiled their data into a master database in Google Earth. After these initial steps, students generated research questions about American attitudes toward America, and searched the database for answers to their questions. Presenters will describe the project in detail, share completed student work, and discuss adaptations to other content areas.

Title: The World of Web 2.0 and You: Exploring the Power of Participatory Media in Education
Format and Location: Lecture, Demonstration, Discussion Green and Gold Conference Room
Description: The shift of the web from a 1-way form (web 1.0) communication to 2-way (web 2.0) is fundamentally shifting society in the ways we communicate, connect, collaborate, create, and maybe even think. While this shift to participatory media is changing many facets of society, it is in education where the power and philosophy of web 2.0 is affording us new opportunities and approaches to what we already know to be best practices. However, with these inevitable changes to education, critical questions have emerged regarding the use of these Web 2.0 technologies in education. How do we best leverage these in the classroom? What is the right tool for the right moment? Where do we go to stay current with all of these changes? Why do we need to bring web 2.0 into the classroom? Do they actually lead to new literacies or do they simply offer a new way to attain existing ones? What impact are they really having on students and schools? Can one be an excellent teacher without using today's technology? This session will strive to answer these and many other questions as we explore the power of participatory media in education starting from square one.
